In this speech, delivered shortly after the beginning of World
War I, and recorded in 1918, Samuel Gompers rallies for the workers
and war laborers in the United Sates, upon whom "the very existence
of our nation" relies. Here, Gompers charges that the war has
triggered readjustment in social attitude, especially in relation
to labor and means of production, and it is this readjustment that
the Labor movement must take full advantage of, for finally it is
recognized that in the struggle for "freedom and democracy,"
it is the American worker that bears the responsibility, as "progress
and civilization hangs in the balance."
