SITE MAP AND NAVIGATION
The Flint Sit-Down Strike audio memories constitute the bulk of
the site content. This content is delivered in three different ways:
Audio essays - there are 3 audio essays describing the most
important phases of the strike - the ORGANIZATION,
the STRIKE itself, and its AFTERMATH.
Each of the essays is illustrated with a large number of transcribed
audio clips. The clips are launched from text links and appear in
a pop-up window on top of the parent browser window. The clip begins
streaming by clicking the PLAY button.
Interactive multimedia - some of the featured strike memories
are delivered as interactive multimedia presentations. The STRIKE
MAP allows users to browse the content by location, the AUDIO
TIMELINE offers a temporal summary of the strike's pivotal moments,
and the SLIDESHOWS
illustrate the strike events and personalities with photos, music,
and narration. Each of these presentations appears in a popup window
on top of the parent browser window. You can close the window by
clicking the CLOSE (X) button).
Search engine - we have given the users the possibility
to make detailed keyword searches
through all of our Flint Sit-Down Strike aural resources. The application
searches through the descriptive metadata of each record, as well
as the actual transcript (available for well over 100 clips). The
query results are returned as links to the audio clips. When you
click on the link (the speaker's name), the clip begins streaming
in a stand-alone RealPlayer (see below).

MULTIMEDIA
We have used two Internet multimedia technologies on the Flint
Sit-Down Strike site:
RealAudio and RealText
ReaAudio and RealText are streaming technologies developed by Real
Networks. You will need to download a free player from www.real.com
in order to play our content. RealPlayer is currently available
for Windows 9x, ME, 2000, XP, Mac OS 8x-9x, Mac OSX, Linux, and
UNIX. We used older, but high quality G2 codecs so the content will
play in older versions of RealPlayer, as well.
All of our RealMedia presentations should stream fairly well over
a 56K modem connection.
Macromedia Flash
The interactive Strike Map presentation requires the Macromedia Flash Player. It is freely available from the Macromedia
site. It works well with most popular browsers, including Internet
Explorer and Netscape. It is available for Windows 9x, ME, 2000,
XP, Mac OS 8x-9x, Mac OSX, Linux, and UNIX.
The interactive Strike Map is best viewed over a faster Cable/DSL/T1
connection.
Screen resolution
Remembering Flint Sit-Down Strike is best viewed in a 600x800 or
higher screen resolution and a 16-bit "high color" setting.
Audio card and speakers.
All of our multimedia content is compatible with most 16-bit audio
cards. High-quality speakers are recommended for best listening
experience.
Internet connection
The content of the site has been optimized for a 56K modem Internet
connection. However, you may experience slowdowns during Internet
peak hours. The streaming technology from RealNetworks, together
with our fast, high-capacity servers should be able to deliver our
multimedia content quite well.
The interactive Strike Map may require a faster Internet connection
to be used to its full potential. A cable/DSL/TI connection is recommended
for best experience.
