Born in 1937, in Goetzville, Harold was the 8th of thirteen children. He speaks about the work he did on the family farm. He milked cows, picked raspberries, haying, feeding animals and cleaning the barn. He remembers going to school at the Goetzville one room school house and the subjects he studied. He remembers his dad playing games with the kids and hunting with his dad since he was young. He remembers his mom always raising a big garden and canning lots of food, including venison. The family did not have indoor plumbing or electricity. During WWII, Harold gathered milk weed pods during, and the family would sell them to the government for them to use in life preservers.
Descriptive Note:
Documenting childhood in the rural Eastern Upper Peninsula, the Goetzville Oral History Collection Project, recorded thirteen stories of individuals who grew up in the region during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. The project, which took place in the spring of 2004, was funded by the Michigan Humanities Council and Raber Township, and was performed by Kathryn Schmitigal, with Barbara Schmitigal.
